DRAGON BOAT FEST’S SPECIALITY: Members of a temple in Serian are seen preparing ‘zong zi’ – or more commonly known as ‘bak chang’ (sticky rice dumplings) – for others, especially the needy, on Saturday. The ‘bak chang’ is traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival, observed on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is a public holiday in China and listed as a ‘Unesco World Intangible Cultural Heritage’. It commemorates the death of patriotic poet Qu Yuan (343–278 BC) who drowned himself when his home state of Chu was invaded. The festival is observed today by ethnic Chinese communities all over the world.
