KOTA KINABALU: More than 10,000 residents in the Beaufort district remain on high alert after floods hit 27 villages on Friday night.

The villagers have yet to evacuate their homes and the authorities are monitoring the situation at Padas river which had reached a dangerous level of 9.16m.

State Civil Defence Department director Kol Mulliadi al-Hamdi said the situation was under control.

“We are working closely with other agencies to ensure the safety of the people,” he said.

He said most of the main roads were still accessible by larger vehicles as of 2pm Saturday.

A total of 12 roads and four schools, namely SK St. Paul, SK Lago, SK Suasa and SAN Limbawang, are affected by the floods.TENOM: Villagers that are at risk of flooding in this area are advised to be cautious due to continuous rain at this the moment in this district.

District Disaster Committee Chairman and District Officer, Madiyem Layapan said this following the two villages flooded in alert level around 3am on Friday.

He said the village are Kampung Labut and Ponontomon about 30 kilometers from here facing the first time flood this year.

“Villagers must always obey any instructions from the authority from time to time for avoiding any possibility,” he told reporters here.

In the incident, Madiyem with government departments involved in the committee also visited the affected villages and ordered the Water Department to supply clean water to the affected villages.

He said that at present there is no relief centers opened and no casualties were reported during the flood incident on both villages.

Meanwhile, villagers, Nustina Latuk and Juli Ansabung when met said, villagers began to worry due to the water overflow and upon realizing water arises from the river they  move to the flood evacuation centre for their safety.

For the Kampung Ponontomon Village Head, Takusik Balari said villagers were getting ready to move to the village culture house if the water level rises.
