SIBU: An accountant sustained second degree burns to 18 per cent of his body after being splashed with a liquid believed to be acid today.

Wong Ching Yong, 58, who is also SUPP Dudong Branch Deputy chairman, was rushed to a private hospital in Sibu before being sent by helicopter to Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching for further treatment.

He sustained second degree burns on his face, chest and his left arm.

The attack happened at Lorong Tuanku Osman 4 in front of a bookstore.

Wong related the attack to the media, saying that as he was about to get into his car during his lunchbreak at 12.15 pm, he heard someone call him “Mr Wong”.

As he turned to face the person, the latter splashed a liquid on him that caused a burning sensation and ran to a waiting motorbike and its rider, which sped off and escaped the scene.

Wong said he immediately rushed into the toilet of the bookstore to wash off as much of the liquid as possible before he was taken to the hospital.

Being an experienced accountant, Wong has been very active in handling insolvency cases in Sarawak.

“I have no idea who would have done something like this to me. I have never done anything to cause harm to others. Even when I am handling insolvency cases, it is to help others to solve their problems where for most of my cases, I settled outside of court,” he said.

Wong said he could not recall anyone who would have wanted to cause him such harm.

“Yesterday morning, I did go to lodge a police report for an insolvency case which I am handling,” said Wong but did not want to make any connection between the attack and the report he lodged on Wednesday.

However, he did not dismiss the possibility that the attack could have been due to his political involvement or his profession as an accountant undertaking insolvency cases.

“Regardless, I believe that politically or professionally, violence should not be used as a means to settle issues or problems. I condemn violence,” said Wong who has been identified as one of the three SUPP potential candidates for Lanang in the coming 14th general election.
