SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong branch chairman Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck yesterday condemned the acid attack on the party branch’s deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong, saying that no one should take the law into their own hands.

Speaking at a press conference, he said any disagreement should be settled amicably as violence would never solve the problem.

“Sibu’s security situation is facing the red light. We have snatch thefts, house break-ins, robberies and so forth which are all quite frequent now in Sibu.

“Hurting people in broad daylight is worrisome.  People are now worried because no one knows who will be the next one to be attacked,” he lamented.

According to him, Wong suffered 18 per cent burn on his body and face and is now treated at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) in Kuching.

“I hope that the police can form a strong team and I also hope that the police can solve this problem in a short time and restore peace to everybody,” he said.

He also urged the people to unite and work with the police to fight crimes.

“I hope that Wong will recover soon and continue to serve the party and the people,” he said.

The 59-year-old, an accountant by profession, was heading towards his vehicle near his office at Tuanku Osman

Lane 4 around 12.15pm on Thursday when two men approached on a motorcycle.

The pillion rider called out “Mr Wong”, and when Wong turned his head in response was splashed with liquid believed to be an acid.

The assailants sped off as Wong rushed into a nearby bookstore owned by his brother to wash his face.

His brother sent him to a private hospital here before rushing him to SGH by helicopter.
