LIMBANG: A man was killed after the lorry he drove plunged into a 100-feet ravine off Jalan Kuari Sungai Bawang at Ulu Medamit here on Thursday.

It is said that George Inau, 43, of Kampung Liang Datu was driving alone at the time of the incident, believed to have occurred around 6pm.

Limbang District police chief Supt Mohd Bukhori Saffai said the lorry driver was killed on the spot due to head injuries, sustained from the impact of the crash.

“Initial investigation indicated that the man might have lost control of the vehicle before plunging into the ravine. The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” Mohd Bukhori told reporters yesterday.

Meanwhile, Limbang Fire and Rescue Department chief Tawang Lingem said upon being notified of the incident, nine personnel led by senior officer II Zakaria Mat Nor were rushed to the site in two fire engines.

It is said that the location of the accident was about 60km away from the station.

“My men had to use ropes and a stretcher to retrieve the victim from the bottom of the ravine,” said Tawang.

In an unrelated case, a 49-year-old man severely injured both his legs in a freak incident involving a shotgun on Wednesday.

It is said that the man was hunting alone in the jungle in Ulu Beruan around 1pm.

According to report received by Mohd Bukhori, at one point the man stumbled to the ground – an accidental move that triggered his fully-loaded shotgun.

“The victim was rushed to Limbang Hospital and later, was transferred to Miri Hospital for further treatment of severe leg injuries,” said Mohd Bukhori, adding that after checking, it was found that the man had no firearms licence or valid document that states he is allowed to carry a shotgun.
