SIBU: The community at the Nanga Sekuau Resettlement Scheme area was involved in a history-making event when the 29th SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2017 (KL2017) Torch Run passed there yesterday.

Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Snowdan Lawan said it was one in a life-time event and the first of its kind to be held in Sibu division.

“This is a proof of government’s appreciation to local community as its sharing partner in the development of this country,” he said at Nanga Sekuau multipurpose hall yesterday.

Snowdan, who is also Balai Ringin assemblyman, hoped the event will inspire the local community to succeed in development and also produce future athletes who compete in the international arena.

The torch run, which started on May 13 and scheduled to end on Aug 12, passes through various locations in the country including the five divisions of Limbang, Miri, Sibu, Samarahan and Kuching in the state.  It reached Sarawak soil in Limbang on June 8, reached Sibu yesterday, will next proceed to Batang Sadong in Simunjan and is due to end in Petra Jaya, Kuching on June 13.

Also present at yesterday’s event were political secretaries to the Chief Minister Romeo Christopher Tegong and Edwin Banta, acting Sibu Resident Katis Noel Nyabong, Selangau district officer Inting Nyami and Penghulu Andrewson Ngalai Asom.
