KUCHING: The hockey season is going into high gear with Hockey Association of Sarawak’s (HAS) announcement that the TNB Sarawak Hockey League will start in July.

The TNB League, touted as the biggest tournament in the state, aims to “revive hockey at the grassroots and identify talents for the State team especially at the youth level.”

As such, it will include a division for Under-17 boys and girls in addition to the men’s and women Open.

The weekend league will be played at three pitches – Sarawak Hockey Stadium, Petra Jaya Stadium and SMK Paku.

Interested clubs must register by 3pm on July 3 with the team managers’ meeting to be held at the Sarawak Hockey Stadium at 4pm.

Entry fee is RM100 (Open) and RM50 for the junior section.

The top three teams will win prizes including cash although the amount “will be decided later based on the number of teams,” according to the HAS press statement.

There is no mention of the league’s duration but it is expected to end before the start of the KL SEA Games on Aug 19.

More details can be obtained from HAS secretary Kangot Awan at 013-8212058 and Celestine Michael Gawan at 012-8851793.
