KUCHING: The High Court has fixed tomorrow (Saturday) to deliver a decision on the originating summons filed by former Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon.

Judge Datuk Douglas Christo Primus Sikayun fixed the date today after both parties done with the submission of their cases.

Due to the urgency of the case and approaching date of the Pujut by-election, the decision will have to be made as soon as possible, the judge reasoned.

The proceedings will take place at 9am tomorrow.

Dr Ting was disqualified as a state representative on May 12 under Article 17(1) (g) of the State of Sarawak Constitution, which states that a person is disqualified from being elected as a member of Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) if he has voluntarily acquired citizenship of or exercised rights of citizenship in or has made a declaration of allegiance to any country outside the Federation of Malaysia.

He filed an Originating Summons in the Kuching High Court on June 7 to challenge the State Legislative Assembly’s (DUN) decision.

Dr Ting was stripped of his membership after 70 state Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers supported the motion tabled by International Trade and E-Commerce Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, while 10 from the opposition rejected it.
