LAHAD DATU: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri wants the panic or SOS button to be streamlined for all e-hailing operations throughout the country.

She said Grabcar and Uber must install the panic button for the safety of passengers who frequently used the e-hailing operations, including in Sabah.

“When the panic button is installed, the safety of passengers would be more assured because the button will be linked directly to SPAD (Land Public Transport Commission) in the Peninsula, and we are asking the LPKP (Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board) in Sabah to do the same thing,” Nancy said yesterday during the presentation of a contribution to Masjid Nurul Ulum and Masjid Nurul Jihad here in conjunction with Ramadan.

Nancy said although the amendments to the laws governing the e-hailing operations had not yet been passed in Parliament, there was no exemption for installing the panic button.

“We will be tabling the amendments again in the next Parliament session and when it is passed, there will be conditions pertaining to the safety of passengers,” she said.

The panic button was proposed after a recent incident where a 29-year-old female passenger was raped by a GrabCar driver.

Nancy said they discussed several other terms that must be complied with by e-hailing service providers to ensure the safety of users.

“They welcome the terms and are willing to implement the panic button application,” she said.

Nancy reminded public transport drivers and operators to always be careful, especially during this holiday season to avoid any undesirable incident.

Also present at the ceremony was Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Datuk Datu Nasrun Datu Mansur.
