KUCHING: The ‘I Love History’ session run by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak recently gathered 24 pupils from several primary schools in the city.

This activity – run together with Tun Abdul Razak Teachers Education Institute (IPG) as part of International Archives Day 2017 events – took place at the state library’s Special Collection Room, which accommodated the schoolchildren and teachers from SK St Teresa, SK Matang Jaya, SK Agama Datuk Haji Abdul Kadir Hassan, SK St Joseph, SK Encik Buyong and SK St Teresa.

The programme facilitators were Suhana Sarkawi of Tun Abdul Razak IPG and Samsol Morshidi Bujang of the state Education Department.

According to Pustaka Negeri spokesperson, ‘I Love History’ aimed to provide an overview of information and materials available at Pustaka Negeri, which could help the students to find out and understand the history of Sarawak better.

“The students were required to take part in activities, group discussions and presentation – where they were introduced to the history of Sarawak including its cultural heritage, the Brooke dynasty and the ‘Anti-cession Movement’,” said the spokesperson.

Moreover, the schoolchildren were also briefed by Pustaka Negeri assistant librarian Alvaena Valentine on how to search for library materials via the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) system, as well as other services available at the state library.
