SIBU: Sibu can become a tourist attraction through the many events held in conjunction with Visit Sibu Year (VSY) 2017, said overall events’ organising committee chairperson councillor Wong Hie Ping.

Citing the remote-controlled boat competition which took place at Lake Garden in April, which attracted participants from countries like United States, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei, she such events could become a tourism product in promoting Sibu to the world.

“Every event held has potential to be organised yearly depending on its response. If each event held in conjunction with VSY 2017 was successfully organised, probably all events will continue to be organised.

“It will also further upgrade the economy for Sibu, especially for the local populace,” she said when officiating at the closing ceremony of the Street Art Festival held here on Saturday night.

Wong also stated that Sibu Municipal Council would continue to engage with private agencies or non-governmental organisations (NGO) in popularising Sibu as a must-visit city in the state.

At the closing ceremony, she handed over prizes to the winners of the colouring and mural-drawing competitions held in conjunction with the Street Art Festival.
