SIBU: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has pledged to raise RM1.03 million for a new school hall and classrooms block of SMK Chung Hua here.

Tiong made the pledge at SMK Chung Hua Old Students Association’s office-bearers inauguration ceremony at Kingwood Hotel here last Sunday night.

Speaking at the function, Tiong who is an adviser to the association, said he would get the federal government to contribute RM500,000 while he would chip in RM100,000.

He pledged to get RM200,000 from businessman Dato Sri Lau Kieng Chai; RM100,000 from businessman Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong; RM100,000 from SMK Chung Hua Old Students Association; and RM30,000 from Lanang MP Alice Lau.

Urging former students of the school to contribute something to their alma mater, he said the school which celebrated its 100th anniversary last year had produced many outstanding students who are now doing very well in various fields.

“We should do our best to reciprocate,” he told former students, suggesting that they liaise with the old students association to see what they could do to help their alma mater.

On another front, Tiong spoke on the importance of smooth leadership tie-over, whether in social organisations or political parties.

He said those who have lived to the ripe old age should be ready to give way to the younger group.

“I’m getting old, going to retire soon. I am looking for my successor,” he said, staying short of mentioning in which field.

Earlier, association chairman Teo Boon Siew said the school was in urgent need of a new hall and some 10 classrooms.

He urged former students to give a helping hand to ensure the school would get the facilities it needed.

Also at the function were Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil and Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat.
