KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat has called on rural youths to involve in voluntary services especially the Malaysian Red Crescent movement in order to help the needy.

“I’ve observed in Kapit, there are few youths involved in voluntary services especially the Malaysian Red Crescent movement. They’re encouraged to participate in the voluntary services organisations. We need their participation so that they can play active roles to help the needy especially during natural disasters such as floods and fires,” said Jamit on Thursday evening when he officiated at the Malaysian Red Crescent Kapit Chapter World Red Cross/Crescent Day Celebration here.

He congratulated MRC Kapit for organising the event to mark the World Red Cross/Crescent Day celebration. The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Everywhere for Everyone’.

Jamit said World Red Cross/Crescent Day is celebrated each year on May 8 to commemorate the birthday of Henry Dunant who founded the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland.

“The theme ‘Everywhere for Everyone’ is relevant and timely. MRC members must use their global network to strengthen their capacity. While we celebrate this World Red Cross / Red Crescent Day we should also reflect on how we can work with individuals, communities and governments to best support the people who need us, reduce their risks and build resilience and to improve our services and accountability.”

He noted that MRC members were always the first to respond in time of need.  “They provide food, clothing, blanket, etc to victims of natural disasters and fires. This noble act should be inculcated in our society. Through their humanitarian activities, MRC alleviates the suffering and pain of victims of the natural disaster.”  He hoped MRC Kapit would continue to make its presence felt to champion the noble cause and remain relevant towards assisting those in need.

At the function, Jamit announced a government grant of RM 10,000 to the MRC Kapit chapter. He also launched the MRC’s flag sale.
