KUCHING: The people of Kampung Pulau Salak are now finally enjoying treated water supply after more than 50 years of waiting.

Yesterday, a pre-launching ceremony of the project, which is undertaken by Department of Rural water Supply (JBALB), was held at the village. Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar officiated at the launching ceremony.

The cost of the project is RM5.9 million. The physical development of the project has been completed and is awaiting electricity connection so that water can be pumped to every house.

“The villagers can now enjoy clean treated water supply after waiting patiently for more than 50 years. I am very proud of them,” Wan Junaidi told a press conference.

He assured the villagers that they would enjoy the water supply withing two months. For the moment, they can only get their water from the fire hydrants.

The minister added that the government had tried various means to provide the villagers with clean water supply, but all those were futile for various reasons.

Among the various means was to harvest rainwater which ended in failure. Underground water was also studied but that too failed because there wasn’t any.

Wan Junaidi said he and Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity who is also Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi had been working tirelessly to bring treated water supply to the villagers through JBALB.
