MIRI: The chairman of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Baram branch, Roland Engan, lodged a police report  about 8.30pm last Friday against Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Long Lama branch chairman Wan Anyie for making false statement that was published in the newspapers on June 19.

He lodged the report at Miri Central Police Station.

Roland, in a statement to the press yesterday, claimed that Wan had made a statement that he (Roland) would not challenge the incumbent Baram MP Anyi Ngau in the coming general election should Barisan Nasional re-nominate him (Anyi) as its candidate.

“Wan told the press that I would not challenge Anyi alleging that I have made a promise not to challenge my own uncle (Anyi) again if he were to be re-nominated.”

Roland said he denied making such a promise, and therefore said Wan was lying to him and the public.

He added that Wan had implied that he had made an agreement with him (Wan) or with someone he knew, ‘which is not true’.

“His false and baseless statement has resulted in confusion and anger among the voters and people in Baram.

“It has also tarnished my image and integrity as a person, a lawyer, a politician and a potential PKR candidate for the coming general election,” Roland said.

He added that he had instructed his lawyer to issue a letter of demand for a public apology, which had to be published in the newspapers, or else he would take legal actions against him.

Roland, who competed in a three-cornered fight against Anyi (BN) and Patrick Sibat Sujang (Independent) in the 2013 general election, narrowly lost the seat by 194 votes.

He polled 8,968 votes while Anyi garnered 9,182. Patrick managed only 363 votes.  Roland also stood as a PKR candidate in Telang Usan in the state election held in May last year. He lost the seat to the incumbent Dennis Ngau by 167 votes.

Dennis garnered 3,231 votes in a straight fight with Roland who received 3,064 votes.
