MIRI : Sarawakians are reminded to preserve the unity and tolerance that currently exist among them as that is not only their strength, but also the strength of the country.

The call was made by Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development, Rosey Yunus when met during her Hari Raya open house on Thursday.

According to her, the multiracial communities in Sarawak are known for their tolerance and understanding of one another’s beliefs and practices, and this is what keeps them united.

“Even though we are multiracial and multi-religious, we have no problem celebrating festivities such as Chinese New Year, Gawai Dayak, Christmas and Hari Raya together.

“This is the strength for our unity and we all must play our roles in preserving this,” she told reporters, adding that Sarawakians of all races and religions do not feel uncomfortable when celebrating these festivities together.

Touching on the Hari Raya open house, Rosey said it was held to provide opportunity for members of the public, family members as well as friends to celebrate the festive occasion together.

“This is an annual event that allows us to share the festive joy with one another, as we know we cannot afford to visit every houses to convey our festive greetings.

“Here, everyone meets and exchange greetings with one another, as they enjoy nice meals and each other’s company,” she pointed out.

Meanwhile, about 5,000 people of various races including longhouse folk attended the Hari Raya open house at Rosey’s residence in Taman Bumiko on Thursday.
