The uneven condition of the road has residents fuming.

MIRI: The sorry state of a road near Holiday Park which is the main road leading to several housing areas is leaving residents fuming.

One of the residents who frequently used the road said the road that links to Jalan Phui Foong (leading to the Teachers’ Training Institute, Miri) is busy during peak hours.

“The city council and Public Works Department should have taken note of the condition. As long as I can remember, it has been there since I moved in last year,” the resident who only wanted to be known as Lau told The Borneo Post.

“I have also heard that the condition could be caused by heavy trucks going to the construction site. Therefore, even if the road is repaired, the damage could happen again.”

During a visit to the affected area, The Borneo Post found that this road is not the only road in poor condition there.

There are several roads linking every corner of the housing area which appear to be in terrible condition as well.

When contacted yesterday, Councillor Aries Leong who is also Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Piasau Youth chief revealed that these roads are now awaiting approval to be repaired under the Malaysian Road Record Information System (Marris) Fund.

“We have appealed to Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting for a faster and efficient way to repair these roads.

“At the moment, the Marris fund could be the solution — however, waiting for the screening and tendering procedure takes time,” Leong said.

He disclosed that since last year, he and his SUPP Piasau Youth members have been inspecting the roads there after receiving complaints from locals.

“We have identified the roads and are hoping the funds would be approved as soon as possible to speed up the process.”

With the ongoing housing projects nearby, Leong doubted that the repaired and resurfaced roads could remain so for long.

“These roads were badly damaged because of heavy lorries carrying construction loads to sites. We are still looking for possible solutions to these frequently damaged roads,” he said.
