KUCHING: PKR Youth is urging the state government to rope in elected representatives from the opposition in Sarawak’s legal team that will be heading to London to study the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

The party’s Stampin branch deputy youth chief Jeffery Mok said the party was recommending the state government include PKR Stampin branch chief See Chee How so he would be able to offer some assistance to support the state’s government mission to London.

“Since it is about fighting for Sarawak’s rights and interests, the mission should transcend political affiliation. Our PKR Stampin chief (See), a lawyer, has studied the matter and would definitely be able to lend much help and support to the legal team.

“It would also be a positive move if the state government were to rope in elected representatives from the opposition in the mission for public confidence and transparency,” Mok told a press conference here yesterday.

The Sarawak’s legal team, headed by Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, will consist of state legal counsel Datuk JC Fong, State Legislative Assembly deputy speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala and lawyers from the State Attorney General’s Chambers.

The legal team is expected to be in London on July 16 to conduct the research that would last four to five days.

Mok said since it’s not the first time the state government had commissioned such a mission to London, they (PKR) were hopeful the mission this time would help accelerate all issues pertaining to claiming the state’s rights and get to the root of it once and for all.

“We cannot go on discussing and debating this issue for another 50 years. We must walk the talk.”

Also, since this mission will involve public money, Mok said the state government should report to the State Legislative Assembly in the next sitting the outcome of the research as well as the total expenses.
