Kenyan tops Men’s 21km race of Spring’s Live Active Run 2017

KUCHING: It was a triumphant moment for John Muiriri Mburu when he reached the finish line ahead of other Men’s 21km contenders in ‘The Spring’s Live Active Run 2017’ here yesterday.

Men’s 21km champion Mburu, flanked by runners-up Maregu and Mutai, on the podium.

The Kenyan, who placed second in the same category last year, clocked 1:05.07 in the half-marathon event – a feat that earned him RM3,000, a trophy and products worth RM800 from Revolution Run.

In second and third place in the category were Jamaes Munyi Maregu and David Mutai, clocking 1:07.19 and 1:09.40, respectively.

Marugu and Mutai pocketed RM2,000 and RM1,500 in cash prizes, respectively.

The participants undergo warm-ups prior to flag-off.

In the Women’s 21km category, Rosemary Mumo Katua recorded a time of 1:18.39 to win RM3,000. The respective runners-up were Naomi Wambui Muriuki and Dorcus Jebotip Taurus, who clocked 1:26.32 1:30.39, respectively.

Muriuki and Taurus bagged RM2,000 and RM1,500, respectively, along with trophies.

In Men’s 10km category, Willy Kipkemoi Rotich came out tops, leaving Benson Kariuiki Waruguru and Sunny Jong as runners-up; while the Women’s 10km winner was Lee Leh Ha, with Wong Mee King and Then Cai Ni as respective runners-up.

The champion, first and second runner-up of each category received RM1,500, RM1,000 and RM500, respectively.

Alex Tiong and Ling Mee Eng were the top male and female runners in the 21km Veteran’s category, while the Veteran’s 10km Men and Women champions were Jack Leong and Eng Siew Jin, respectively.

Winners of the Veteran’s 21km category each take home RM1,000, while the top runners of the Veteran’s 10km category each received RM500.

Young runner take off as soon as the horn blares for the 1km Kids Dash.

There were also the 5km Fun Run and 1km Kids Dash categories.

The run, which entered its sixth edition this year, attracted 3,119 participants.

In his opening remarks, Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai hoped that more corporate bodies would hold charity running events going forward.

“We can say that the Spring Live Active Run is a community project because parts of the proceeds go to charities. I hope more organisations would do their part in raising funds for charity (programmes) like this.

“Plus, obesity now is a problem among children in Malaysia. With this kind of event, we hope to instil healthy lifestyles in the people.”

Later, Abang Abdul Wahap together with The Spring’s leasing and marketing director Andy Song flagged off the Fun Run, while Forest City director Zhang Xin blared the horn for the 10km events.

The half-marathon races were flagged off by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia chief executive officer Tomoyuku Sinnishi.

Parts of the proceeds from this year’s ‘Live Active Run’ would be channelled to Persatuan Dialisis Cahaya Kuching, Hope Place Kuching and Society for Kuching Urban Poor (SKUP) – each of them would receive RM10,000.
