KUCHING: The state-level Women’s Day celebration, themed ‘Sarawak Women in Sports’, will take place at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) this Aug 26.

According to Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus, Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the ceremony.

Speaking to reporters during the ministry’s ‘Ramah Tamah Hari Raya Aidilfitri’ event at a hotel here, Rosey said in addition to an exhibition on women’s achievement in sports, the highlight of the day would be the launch of the book ‘Sarawak Women in Sports’, which charts the contributions of 42 personalities.

Previously, the Women and Family Department published books celebrating Sarawak women in various fields such as politics, entrepreneurship and arts.

“There will also be awards given out for leadership, non-governmental organisation (NGO), volunteerism, the Datuk Patinggi Laila Taib Award and a special award in sports,” Rosey said, adding that the entrepreneurship award had been removed because it was taken over by another agency.

She pointed out that although they did their best to utilise all their resources to trace past female athletes for the book, they might have missed a few individuals.

Rosey said that if any member of the public knew of any woman sports personality who had not been approached for the book, they could get in touch with the Women and Family Department.

The event also hosted Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah, Assistant Minister of Community Well Being Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, the ministry’s permanent secretary Dr Saadiah Abdul Samat, Sarawak Women and Family Department director Noriah Ahmad, and state Welfare Department director Abang Shamsudin Abang Seruji.
