KUCHING: The government has reiterated its commitment for more international sports events to be organised in Sarawak as a boost to tourism.

Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Snowdan Lawan was speaking during a dinner event for the 3rd CMS Borneo Junior Open Squash Championship at a local hotel here on Sunday.

“Sarawak can host international tournaments because we have the facilities here. We are also going to have more tournaments in many years to come here too,” he said.

The state, he added, has all the attractions for visitors to experience when they come.

At the event, Snowdan witnessed a ceremony for the handing over of sponsorships.

Squash Racquets Association of Sarawak (SRAS) president Robert Lau Hui Yiew thanked Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (CMSB) for their support.

230 players from 11 countries including Malaysia are participating in the championship currently held at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Petra Jaya.

The tournament, which ends today, attracted players aged 11 to 19 from 10 countries.

Also present during the ceremony were CMSB group managing director Datuk Richard Curtis, tournament organising chairman Emmanuel David, Lea Sports Centre managing director Raymond Sim and Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee.
