JULAU: Parents have been advised not to pamper their children but give due consideration to giving teachers the authority to discipline them.
Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat said teachers discipline their students as they want to see their charges excel in their studies as much as the parents themselves.
“The teachers have their own reasons (when disciplining students) because they want to see their students excel in their studies just as much as the parents.
“As teachers’ performances are mainly gauged by the achievement of their pupils or students, they are prepared to give their all to ensure their success,” he said when launching the Engkamop zone UPSR Excellence Camp at SK Nanga Entaih, near here on Thursday.
Thirty students from SK Nanga Entaih, SK Nanga Engkamop, SK Ulu Entabai, SK Nanga Sengaih and SK Chambu are participating in the four-day motivational camp.
As the elected representative for Meluan, Rolland said his vision was to see as many students as possible from the area become professionals in various fields such as medicine and engineering.
In that respect, he added that he had made a commitment to give incentives to local students who were offered places to pursue degree courses in engineering and medicine.
“Good academic qualification would provide the local populace, who mainly survive on farming, with an alternative means of living,” he said, pointing out that knowledge will enable them to survive without having to solely depend on their land.
While advising parents to accord top priority towards their children’s education, Rolland assured them that the government is always ready to extend assistance through various agencies.
He said he was pleased that representatives from Yayasan Sarawak had agreed to avail themselves at the function to enlighten the locals on various assistance provided by the agency to deserving students.
Among those present were SK Nanga Entaih headmaster Stephen Johnson, Julau District Education Office representative Thadeus Liyam Chabo, headmasters of participating schools and heads of various departments.
