MIRI: School authorities are urged to organise social and cultural activities for their students and teachers to celebrate festive occasions.

Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said such events could help to instill and enhance racial and religious harmony and unity among the students.

Speaking during a Gawai Raya celebration at SK Lutong yesterday, Ting said the celebration was an avenue for the pupils to learn and understand the need for racial and religious harmony among the diverse races.

“Apart from serving as a good avenue for social interaction, the pupils indirectly would be able to know better the culture of other races through the festive celebration. This is very important in order to nurture strong racial unity among the young generation.

“Sarawak indeed is a model state for unity and racial harmony.

“However, we should not take it for granted and continuous efforts must be taken in order

to safeguard the peace and harmony we are enjoying today,” he said.

Also present were the school headmaster Saufie Sa’ait, chairman of the school’s parent-teacher association (PTA) John Justin and Penghulu Ahmad Rahman of Kampung Pengkalan Lutong.
