GCM swimmers splash to 15 gold on first day

MIRI: The hosts took charge on the first day of the 2nd Gymkhana Club Miri (GCM) International Inter-Club Swimming Championship at the club’s pool yesterday.

Fielding the largest contingent of 35 swimmers, GCM splashed to the fore with 15 gold, 16 silver and 14 bronze medals to lead the 10-team championship.

Victoria Swimming Club from Kota Kinabalu (Penampang), Sabah were second with 11-7-3 while defending champions Dashing Dolphin Swimming Club of Sibu managed 8-8-8 to stay in third spot.

Lying in fourth and fifth were Royal Brunei Recreation Club (5-10-9) and Preppies Swimming Club of Labuan (5-6-6).

The Sarawak Club from Kuching has picked up 2-5-9 so far, Brunei Speed Swimming

Club (0-2-1), Hammerhead Swimming Club of Brunei (0-1-4), Kelab Rekreasi Petroliam of Miri (0-1-1) and Kuching’s Sarakuatik Swimming Club

(0-0-1).

Earlier, Miri Municipal Council councillor Karambir Singh officiated at the opening on behalf of Piasau assemblyman Dato Sebastian Ting.

GCM manager Muragaya Veloo, who was representing club president Vincent Lu, thanked all participating teams for their continued support to the championship.

“GCM, being one of the oldest clubs in Sarawak, always plays an important role in organising various sports events to promote a healthy lifestyle among members of the public,” he said.
