BARIO: The iM Sarawak’s Junior Journalists Programme (JJP) enters its third year this year with the aim to develop journalistic skills amongst students in lower secondary schools here.

Through the programme, students gain writing, photography and interviewing skills through workshops, and are given the opportunity to practise their newly-acquired skills by conducting interviews with people, especially visitors to Bario.

Ever since the programme was launched, students from SMK Bario have been participating in an exchange programme with International College Hong Kong Hong Lok Yuen since October 2016.

The students get to practise their English skills with native speakers of the language by sharing online stories and pictures of their respective countries.

According to 1Malaysia Sarawak Advisory Council chairman Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum, from the progress that JJP has made, iM Sarawak very much believes that education is about equipping people with the skills to help them help themselves.

“By imparting the skills required to carry on these activities themselves, the students will continue to benefit from the seeds that we have sown here. This is evident from the progress that the iM Sarawak’s JJP has made,” he added.

He also commented that it was iM Sarawak’s hope that the people of Bario benefitted from iM Sarawak’s activities and will use the skills they have learnt for the betterment of their future.

The school-going children of Bario are, like all children, curious and hungry for knowledge. However, because they are located in such a remote location, most of their education in English has been dependent on what their teachers can teach them from books only.

Apart from JPP, the English Language Community Outreach Programme (Elcop) is also another programme implemented by iM Sarawak in Bario under its i-Teach Group.
