Dismal show by Jun Hoong, Dhabitah at world championships

KUALA LUMPUR: National diver Cheong Jun Hoong displayed a poor performance in the opening day of the 17th International Swimming Federation (Fina) World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Saturday.

The 27-year-old diver who came in third place in the preliminary round on Friday, finished last among the 12 divers in the women’s 1m springboard final after accumulating 252.45 points, according to Fina website;www.fina.org.

Australian diver, Maddison Keeney claimed the gold with 314.95 points, followed by Nadezhda Bazhina of Russia  who took the silver with 304.70 points, while Elena Bertocchi of Italy had to settle for bronze with 296.40 points.

Another Malaysian diver, Nur Dhabitah Sabri, failed to qualify to the final round after finishing in the 17th place in the preliminary round on Friday.

Only the top 12 divers moved to the final.

Meanwhile, the pair of Chew Yiwei/Ooi Tze Liang qualified to the men’s 3m springboard synchronised final after finishing in eighth place out of 21 divers in the preliminary round with 384.69 points. — Bernama
