GCM emerge from pool with overall title

Victorious Gymkhana Club Miri swimmers after amassing 36 gold medals in the two-day championship.

MIRI: Gymkhana Club Miri (GCM) emerged as overall champion in the 2nd GCM International Inter-Club Championship which ended at the club pool on Sunday.

Nearly 180 swimmers representing 10 clubs Brunei, Labuan, Sabah, Kuching, Sibu and Miri took part in the two-day competition.

GCM swept a total of 76 medals comprising 36 gold, 19 silver and 21 bronze to comfortably distance itself from second placed Victoria Swimming Club of Labuan which won 16-8-4 (total of 28 medals).

Defending champion Dashing Dolphin Swimming Club from Sibu managed third spot after snatching 34 medals (9-15-10).

The other teams were Preppies Swimming Club (Penampang), Royal Brunei Recreation Club, The Sarawak Club (Kuching), Hammerhead Swimming Club (Brunei), Brunei Speed Swimming Club, Kelab Rekreasi Petroliam (Miri) and Sarakuatik Swimming Club (Kuching).

The hosts also bagged the best swimmer awards (Under 8 age-group) for boys (Deven Max Carrol) and girls (Annabella Frederic).

Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin officiated at the closing ceremony and gave away the prizes.
