1,000 expected to attend BCF 2017 grand opening parade

SIBU: About 1,000 people of various races are expected to join the grand parade to kick-off the 10-day Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2017 at Sibu Town Square, which begins tomorrow (July 20).

BCF organising chairperson Rogayah Jamain said participants from various non-governmental organisations will converge at Jalan Bujang Suntong for the start of the procession at 5.45pm.

“Roads within the procession route will be closed to traffic beginning at 5.15pm on that day,” she said in a press conference yesterday.

The procession will go through Jalan Kampung Nyabor, Jalan Island, Jalan Channel, Jalan Workshop, Jalan Central, Jalan Morshidi Sidek and Jalan Blacksmith.

Rogayah, who is deputy chairperson of Sibu Municipal Council, said the procession will be followed by the official opening ceremony of BCF 2017 by Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at 7.30pm.

Incorporated in the programme of the opening ceremony is the launching of a book titled ‘A Taste of Sibu’.

Besides the main stage, three other stages have also been set up to showcase the cultural diversity of the Malay/Melanau, Dayak and the Chinese communities, along with stalls selling various delicacies of the three communities.

Following the opening ceremony Abdul Karim is scheduled to tour the various  community pavilions, cultural belt exhibition, as well as BCF Tradex 2017 showcasing small and medium enterprise products; light and heavy machinery;  banks; telecommunication companies; retailers; food and beverage; and handicrafts.

The launching of BCF Tradex 2017 is slated for 9pm.

Meanwhile, CCK Fresh Mart, represented by area manager Ling Nang Ung, handed over 250 sponsored aprons to BCF food stall operators yesterday.
