KUCHING: Sarawak bagged 28 gold medals to finish as overall champion in the Sarawak Chief Minister Borneo Cup International Taekwondo (WTF) Championship 2017 held here recently.

The state contingent walked away with the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Adenan bin Satem Challenge Trophy.

The championship was divided into four categories, namely Super Cadet (9-11 years old), Cadet (12-14), Junior (15-17) and Senior (18 and above).

The hosts also emerged  champion with 15 gold medals in the Super Cadet category ahead of runner-up Sabah and Indonesia third.

In the Junior category the state exponents finished runner-up with eight gold behind champion Taiwan and above Indonesia third.

Their teammates, however, only managed to win three gold in the Cadet category and two medals in the senior category.

The Cadet category was won by Indonesia with eight gold medals while Taiwan swept both the junior and senior categories with 11 and seven gold respectively.

About 500 athletes, coaches and officials from 16 countries took part in the championship held at the state Indoor Stadium here.

The two-day poomsae and sparring tournament was organised by the Sarawak State Taekwdondo (WTK) Association (PTNS) and sanctioned by the national body and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, organising chairman and deputy president of PTNS Azizul Annuar Adenan expressed his satisfaction over the successful conclusion of the event.

“We have been able to unite over 1,000 volunteers, friends and families from 16 nations through one sport over two days, making this biennial international taekwondo event a successful affair.

“While I am hugely honoured to give away the medals to the winners, what means the most to me was to present the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Adenan bin Satem Challenge Trophy to the overall champion, that is Sarawak,” he said.

Also present the closing ceremony were PTNS president Mohamad Salleh Sani, its national technical chairman Master Dhanaraj Rassiah and its state technical chairman cum state chief instructor Master Tan Check Joon.
