LUBOK ANTU: Residents of Rumah Unya Saran, Jambu Lalang and Rumah Deli, Sungai Pinang in Ulu Skrang were all smiles yesterday when Engkilili assemblyman Dr Jonichal Rayong Ngipa declared open their newly installed electricity supply.

Rayong said this was just one of the many successful government rural electrification scheme (RES) projects carried out for the good of the people.

“Now that you have 24-hour electricity supply I hope that your longhouses are lighted brightly when I come here again,” Rayong jokingly told the residents.

He added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had approved an allocation of RM28 million to make sure that longhouses in Ulu Skrang are properly supplied with electricity.

He also announced the approval of a Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) allocation of RM200,000 for upgrading the road and drainage system for the benefit of the longhouse folks, and that the local Public Works Department would implement the project.

He also announced the approval of other projects – RM200,000 for the Rumah Nimong Begantong-Ulu Skrang road, the Rumah Belissan Tinting Pasang-Nanga Emperan road (RM300,000) and a suspension bridge to link SK Nanga Menjau school in Ulu Skrang (RM250,000).

Rayong, who is also United Peoples Party (UPP) Youth chairman, said: “We in Skrang here should support the Barisan Nasional (BN) government both at the federal and state level.”

At the function Rayong presented RM7,000 from his minor rural project (MRP) for the village security and development committee of Rumah Lalang and another RM5,000 for its Women’s bureau.

Lubok Antu MP Datuk William Nyallau Badak also delivered a speech at the function, granting a MRP of RM3,000 to the longhouse Women’s bureau.

The Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) supreme council member has so far contributed RM36,000 to finance its cost of electrical wire installation to aid the supply of electricity.
