Big bike rider dies in crash with overturned lorry

KUCHING: A collision between a high-powered motorcycle and a lorry claimed the life of a 24-year-old man at Km54 Jalan Kuching – Serian on Monday.

The deceased, identified as Mohd Mukhairiz Suhaili from Matang Jaya, was riding alone when the incident happened around 8am.

According to State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department deputy chief DSP Bingkok John, the incident was believed to have occurred when a lorry heading towards Serian went out of control and crashed on its side.

“The lorry was travelling in the slow lane, but crashed on the fast lane. The victim, who was then riding on the right lane, was unable to avoid the vehicle and crashed into it,” he said when contacted, adding the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The lorry driver and his assistant were not injured during the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Safety Act 1987.

In a separate accident, a female pedestrian was taken to hospital after she was spotted lying by the side of the road in Muara Tuang yesteday.

The unidentified woman was believed to have been a victim of a hit-and-run while attempting to cross the road.

Members of the public found her around 11am and called for an ambulance, which sent the lightly-injured woman to Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.
