SARIKEI: An old ‘tamu’ (farmers market) here, which was the venue of this year’s Sarikei Food Festival’, will be turned into a ‘pasar malam’ (night market).
According to Sarikei District Council (SDC) chairwoman Wong Zee Yeng, there are still traders selling food and drinks at Tamu Nyelong even after the conclusion of the festival last weekend.
“The traders can still run their operations there till the end of this month, after which the old tamu will be closed for renovation works.
“If everything progresses as planned, the work should reach completion in one month’s time, and the new ‘pasar malam’ should open in September,” she said recently.
The food festival was aimed at not only helping local small-time traders to generate extra incomes but also to promote this district through its offering of signature food and products like pineapples.
Tanjung Manis MP Datuk Norah Tun Abdul Rahman, who declared the closing of the festival on Sunday, commended SDC for its great initiative in helping local small-time entrepreneurs.
There were also other activities taking place throughout the festival such as the an autoshow, demonstrations on jetskis and car drifting, busking performances, traditional games and competitions.
The organiser also held a presentation of prizes to the top contenders for the ‘Best Traditional Stall’ and ‘Best Food and Drink Stall’ awards. There was also a noodle-cooking contest that highlighted pineapples – this district’s most prized crop.
