DBKU to hold two major cycling events for City Day celebrations

KUCHING: The Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) will be organising two big cycling events in September in conjunction with the 29th Kuching City Day celebration.

DBKU mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said the first event is ‘Ride for Unity & Peace’ on Sept 16 at the Celebrity Square, Sarawak Sports Complex in Petra Jaya.

According to the mayor, the ride is very much different from other cycling event as it does not only promote a healthy lifestyle through cycling but also aimed at helping the needy.

“This activity is very meaningful because it will be held on Sept 16 to tother with Malaysia Day,” he told reporters in a press conference at the Sarawak Indoor Stadium yesterday.

With him were DBKU principal assistant director Morshidi Ahmad, Kuching District Police chief  ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai, Armed Forces representative 1st Div Lt Col Ahmad Jaidi, Lions Club Kuching representative Cecil Adenan and Sarawak Sports Corporation representative Michelle Ong.

Wahap said the participants will be divided into five groups and ride distances ranging from 4km to 42km to the Lions Nursing Home, Jalan Stutong; Salvation Army (Boy) Jalan Ban Hock; Cheshire Home & Blind Centre, Jalan Ong Tiang Swee; Salvation Army (Girls & Children Home Jalan Ong Tiang Swee and Rumah Anak Yatim Laila Taib, Jalan Sultan Tengah and do charity work there.

“As this year is 2017, we are targeting 2,017 participants and we will also welcome those if the number exceeds the target,” he added.

Those who register before Aug 28 will only need to pay RM60 entry fee while those registering after that will pay RM80.

Participants will be given a riding jersey and a medal.

Meanwhile, DBKU will be organising the 1st DBKU Criterium Race at the Sarawak Sports Complex on Sept 17.

Six categories namely Sarawak Closed, Boys (U20), Veteran (40 and Above), MTB, Open and All Stars (50 and Above) will be contested with the champions for the Open getting RM1,000 and medal, Sarawak Closed RM700 and medal, and RM600 plus medal for Boys, Veteran and MTB; and RM500 plus medal for All Stars.

Those registering for the race before Aug 20 need only pay entry fee of RM90 and those registering after that date shall pay RM100.

For any additional event that the participant wish to join, he/she will need to pay RM20 per event.

The forms for both events can be obtained form DBKU payment counters or downloaded from the DBKU website at www.dbku.sarawak.gov.my.
