KOTA SAMARAHAN: Residents are very worried that the collapsed stretch of the huge monsoon drain at Lorong 30A1D Taman Samarindah continues to worsen by the day.

A resident, who preferred to be called G Teo, told The Borneo Post yesterday that they had complained to the local authority but despite acknowledging the complaints nobody from the authority came to look at the situation and tell them of any action they would take.

“To us, by the look of it the wall of the drain had been damaged badly and collapsed quite some time ago. Now it is starting to erode the earth near to our houses,” he said.

G Teo said he did not expect the soil erosion to be that bad after the drain collapsed but now it is just a few feet away from his kitchen area.

“My mother-in-law used to plant vegetables at the back of the house but now the whole area had eroded. There is no more vegetable left,” he said, pointing to the spot where the garden used to be.

G Teo added that he and his neighbours had sleepless nights when it rained heavily as they had to be vigilant in case anything happened to their property.

“Water from the heavy rain and the tide further caused the soil to erode and if there is no repair to the collapsed drain then I am very worried what could happen to residents and of course my property which I bought four years ago,” he elaborated.

Acknowledging that he was not sure what to do, G Teo, however, said he did complain to the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council a number of times.

“Until now there is no positive outcome from the local council and no explanation or answers had been given to the affected residents,” he lamented.

Thus, he hoped the council would address the situation without any delay before it becomes a major problem and too costly.

“Because we did not get any response from the authority, we decided to highlight the matter to the media to help us because if the soil erosion worsens our lives will be at stake,” he said.

When contacted, the council said they would look into the matter and send their men to access the situation.
