KUCHING: The SK Pulau Seduku project in Sri Aman is expected to be completed some time this year.

State Education director Rakayah Madon said the appointed contractor had given their commitment to finish the project by this year.

“The work has been stopped for a while but the contractor will continue and finish it.

“We have demanded more workers to ensure project completion,” she told a press conference after the closing ceremony of the 2nd International Conference on Special Education (ICSE 2017) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here yesterday.

Minister of Education Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong, Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and South East Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (Seameo) Regional Centre for Special Education director Datin Dr Yasmin Hussain were present.

The new primary school for children of Pulau Seduku will have six classrooms, a teacher’s room, resource centre, surau, science laboratory, three teachers’ quarters and other facilities.

A news report in 2013 indicated that Kampung Pulau Seduku residents had vacated the island since November 2012 at the Sarawak government’s directive due to lack of utilities and for safety reasons, but the school remains on the island, at the Sungai Lupar estuary.

The school’s relocation was approved in 2013 and construction in the third rolling plan of the 10th Malaysia Plan.

Early this year, the Education Ministry reminded contractor of the completion deadline on Jan 30.

It was said that the project work, about 90 per cent completed, had been delayed by technical matters.
