Bishop Hii to lead SMK Sacred Heart commemoration walk

SIBU: Catholic Bishop Rt Rev Joseph Hii will lead a group of people in a commemoration walk from Mission Road to SMK Sacred Heart in Oya Road today to mark the 50th anniversary of the school’s relocation.

Dr Hii Sui Cheng, who is the organiser of the walkathon, said other noteworthy figures joining the walk are retired teacher Michael Chong and Awang Ali Basah Pengiran Kerta.

The latter is the father of former Nangka assemblyman Datuk Awang Bemee.

“I am truly touched by the response as the number has grown to more than 15 now. That is the spirit of Sacred Heart School,” Hii told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Hii, Chong and head boys of the respective classes are to do the flag-off of the walkathon at Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) at 6.45am.

Participants are to walk 1.5km to the school to join others for a host of activities in the celebration.

“The walk is very important event to remember the 50th anniversary of the school’s move from Mission Road to Oya Road here.

“Apart from the walkathon, a series of exciting activities have been lined up such as jogathon, food fair, aerobic, handing over of the Mill Hill – De La Salle Resource Centre, unveiling of the SHS Heritage Corner, signing of the 50th anniversary of Sacred Heart Secondary School Relocation Plaque and Brother Albinus Cup Rugby Competition (Aug 5 – 6).

About 2,000 current students and former students, parents and teachers are expected to join the celebration.
