SIBU: Excitement is in the air for residents of Rumah Kayan Nyelang at Nanga Dia in Kapit Division now that the project to supply electricity to their longhouse has commenced.

On Monday, Tuai Rumah Kayan Nyelang and his charges helped the project contractor to install underwater power cable to the longhouse.

Residents of four other longhouses, namely Rumah Richard Unggat, Rumah Jambon Antas, Rumah  Lugan,  Rumah Angkin Repin lent a helping hand.

Kayan said the project came under Rural Electrification Scheme (RES) implemented by the government.

“The longhouse folks are not only happy; they are also in high spirits that finally our longhouse will be supplied with electricity.

“At the moment we are spending at least RM250 monthly (per household) to buy diesel for our generator set. With this RES implemented, it will help lessen our burden and provide 24-hour power supply,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Kayan said besides his longhouse, a few other longhouses at Nanga Belawai, Nanga Ensilai and Nanga Stapang will also benefit from the same project.

According to him, the project is expected to be completed towards year-end.

Speaking on behalf of his charges, he said as the chieftain to the 33-door longhouse, he was happy the government included them in the project.

“Thanks to Barisan Nasional (BN) government and our people’s representative Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi for continually bringing development to Kapit,” he said.
