MIRI: Eager shutterbugs are invited to flaunt their photography skills and join the Telang Usan Photography Contest which runs until Jan 31, 2018.

The contest was launched by Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau here yesterday in the presence of Miri Photographic Society members.

It is divided into two categories – DSLR or Mirrorless (category 1) and Handphone (category 2) with scenery and human interest themes.

For the first category, the prize is RM2,500 for the champion, RM1,500 (second place), RM1,000 (third place) and  RM100 (10 consolation places) and certificates.

Meanwhile for the second category, the winner will get RM1,000, second prize is RM500, third place (RM300) and 10 consolation prizes of RM100 each and certificates.

According to Dennis, the pictures must be taken within the Telang Usan constituency and they should be shot between Aug 8 this year and Jan 31 next year, and pictures taken on dates other than the stipulated period will be disqualified.

He explained that the Telang Usan constituency starts from Logan Sibong on the Baram River side up to Long Palai, and on the Tinjar River side it starts from Long Batan up to Apoh Jaring, while on the Apoh River side, it is from Long Bemang to Long Bedian and covers the Penan area of Sungai Layun, Sungai Patah and Sungai Akah.

“One of the main objectives of holding this competition is to encourage people, regardless of their race or nationality, to come and capture the magical moments of Telang Usan and experience the  year-round beauty of Telang Usan through the camera lens,” he said, adding the competition is open to Malaysians and non-Malaysians of all ages.

He also highlighted a couple of events that would be organised in Telang Usan which might also interest the public, and shutterbugs can take the opportunity to take photos during the events.

“One major event will be held soon at Long Lama, which is the ‘Pesta Sukan Air Long Lama dan Perayaan Ulangtahun ke-2 Penubuhan Daerah Telang Usan’ from Sept 30 to Oct 1.

“We are also planning to organise the Baram White Water Rafting contest in Tinjar to be held in November this year and somewhere in December, we are hoping to organise a ‘Pesta Muda-Mudi’ for the youths from Long Laput to Long Liam at Daleh Long Pelutan @ Long Miri,” he said, adding other festivities held at various longhouses are also something to look forward to.

Dennis also said that it had been decided that the photo competition would be held for at least five years and at the end of the five years (in 2020), the photos would be compiled into a book.

“All the winners’ photos and any other interesting pictures will be compiled in a book and as this is something historical for Telang Usan, we will try to get the Chief Minister of Sarawak to launch the book when the time comes.

“The book will present to other people or probably to the world the uniqueness and beauty of Telang Usan,” he added.

Contest forms are available at the Telang Usan service centre at Luak Bay commercial centre, Miri Photographic Society Facebook page or by contacting Sylvester Wong (012-8778788), Dominic Nyurang Ajang (019-8525477) or Anny Soo (012-8776299).

Participants are required to submit their best snapshot by Jan 31, 2018 before 4pm and a brief description of the picture should also be submitted.
