Awang Tengah: Emphasis on TVET to continue

KUCHING: The state government will continue to give emphasis to technical and vocational education and training (TVET) among students in its efforts to produce a high quality workforce.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said with skilled manpower, it could contribute towards the government’s efforts in developing its industrial sector.

“Parents must encourage their children to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, which are crucial to support the major transformation through the development of the digital economy,” he said at Kuching Polytechnic’s 25th convocation ceremony on Wednesday.

Awang Tengah, who is also Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, said Sarawak was now heading

towards a developed state status with the development of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score), now in its second phase, to achieve its vision of becoming a high-income state by 2030.

“To achieve this aspiration, we need more professional, semi-professional and skilled manpower to cater to the workforce demand in the future.”

On the convocation, Awang Tengah said Kuching Polytechnic had achieved good performance with around 98 per cent of its graduates successfully landing a job in their respective fields.

“This is a good achievement that meets the government’s desire of producing a more skilled workforce,” he added.

Awang Tengah later presented the graduates with their certificates, which was also witnessed by the polytechnic’s director Kamaludin Daud.

A total of 1,419 graduates in civil engineering, mechanical, electrical, information and communication technology, petrochemical and trading courses received their diplomas during the ceremony.
