SERIAN: A 36-year-old civil servant is among six people detained for suspected involvement in drug-related offences here.

Five of them, aged 18 to 25 years old, were picked up at 10pm on Aug 8 while the civil servant was arrested near a bank here at 1.15am on Aug 9.

Serian District police chief DSP Aswandy Anis said the six were arrested by a police team from Serian District Narcotics Division, following public tip-off.

He said during the arrest of the first five suspects, one was found with two straw tubes containing substance believed to be methamphetamine (Syabu).

Police also confiscated 2.5g Syabu valued at RM650 from the civil servant.

“The civil servant, believed to be the runner, is from Kuching while the rest are from Serian. All six tested positive for methamphetamine,” Aswandy told reporters here yesterday.

He said the suspects would remain on remand to facilitate investigation under Section 12(3) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952.

Moreover, Aswandy said between January and July this year, Serian District Narcotics Division solved three cases under Section 39A(1), 20 under Section 12(3), and 155 under Section 15(1)(a).

“Syabu seems to be the most common drug abused by locals in Serian.

“Between January and July this year, we confiscated a total of 51.96g of Syabu and 0.86g of ganja from those arrested,” he said.

Aswandy said police are seriously looking at civil servants involved in drug abuse. His men would not compromise when dealing with the drug scourge.

He reminded the public, especially local residents and those in community associations, to be the eyes and ears of the police, and come forward to furnish information on drug activities in their areas.

Present at the press conference were Serian District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division head ASP Alias Nen and Serian District Narcotics Division head ASP Tansli Mering.
