KOTA KINABALU: A suspect was arrested by police less than 15 minutes after snatching a handbag of a woman at Gaya Street here on Wednesday.
City police chief ACP M. Chandra said the handbag of the 33-year-old woman was snatched in front of Pizza Hut Restaurant, near Sugar Bun around 1.20pm.
“The victim had just finished lunch with a friend and was standing outside the restaurant when an unknown man came and grabbed her handbag and ran towards Jalan Segama.
“Coincidently, a police team on patrol heard the woman’s cry for help and immediately chased after the suspect and apprehended him near the Upperstar Restaurant in Segama,” Chandra said.
Police also recovered the victim’s handbag and the suspect was taken to the city police headquarters in Karamunsing for further investigation under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery.
The suspect has been remanded until August 16.
Chandra reminded the public to be more careful when walking along the street to prevent such unwanted incidents from happening.
