MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) is ready to make Visit Miri Year (VMY) 2018 a grand showcase for the resort city.

Mayor Adam Yii wants all local tourism stakeholders to give their best in order to ensure the goal set for VMY 2018 is met.

Yii pointed this out when chairing the first VMY 2018 organising committee meeting at the council’s conference room last Saturday.

He said MCC would head the organising committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture; Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), Miri Resident’s Office, Miri District Office, Sarawak Forestry Corporation, non-governmental organisations, tourism-related agencies and corporate bodies.

During the meeting, the committee set up eight sub-committees namely marketing and publicity; transportation; accommodation; events and calendar; safety and security; tour packages and products; local produce; and tourism impact studies.

Yii called on all members of the main committee to look into various aspects of VMY 2018.

MCC would draw up the calendar of events for next year, continue its beach-cleaning campaign as well as request owners of shophouses to repaint the buildings for a clean and refreshed outlook.

Yii highlighted the need for the committee to organise more cultural events featuring various ethnic groups here.

“We have to identify unique events only found in the city. For publicity, we need to maximise the use of social media to promote our programmes.”

He told the organising committee to come out with souvenir items that feature the city’s mascot – the seahorse.

“The council will produce a blueprint for the whole VMY 2018 campaign and submit it to the state government for approval. Let’s work together by utilising our expertise to formulate an attractive package for promoting Miri city to boost the local economic.”

The meeting was attended by deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad, city secretary Morshidi Frederick, Councillor Ernest

Goh who is MCC tourism development standing committee chairman and STB representative Albert Sim.
