Awang adek is new mara chairman

PUTRAJAYA: Former Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin has been appointed as the new chairman of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), effective this Sept 1.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who made the announcement in a statement, here, yesterday said the appointment was agreed upon by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“I believe that with his experience, he could lead Mara in implementing the policies and plans of the ministry in achieving the objectives of the National Transformation programme,” he said. Awang Adek, 62, who was also formerly Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister, replaces Tan Sri Annuar Musa who does not wish to continue his contract as Mara chairman.

Annuar was appointed to the post on July 19, 2013. His contract was extended on Aug 12, 2015 and it ended last Friday, Aug 11.

Awang Adek was Deputy Finance Minister from 2006 to 2013 and Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister from 2004 to 2006.

He had also served as Malaysia’s ambassador to the United States from 2014 to 2016, and was a Senator from 2009 until 2013.

Awang Adek was once a lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia from 1983 to 1985 and then joined Bank Negara until 2001, with his last post being Assistant Governor. — Bernama
