Higher education opportunities not limited to urban youngsters, says principal

MIRI: Some higher education institutions appear to be focusing on major cities and townships to recruit students, ignoring youths in rural areas.

This should not be happening, said Dr Antony Hii, principal and president of IBS College Miri, one of the pioneering business colleges in northern Sarawak.

“There are worrying signs that young Malaysians living in rural and less developed areas of the country are not given equal opportunity to further their education locally,” he said.

He said such a trend would lead to youths in rural areas being deprived of important information when selecting higher education institutions to study in.

To bridge this gap, IBS College Miri has made efforts over the years to spread knowledge about higher education pathways in business studies.

For the past few years, the College has made trips to rural areas in Sarawak and Sabah like Kapit, Tatau, Long Lama, Tinjar, Belaga, Ranau, and Kota Belut.

IBS College Miri visited schools in those areas, and organised talks and seminars on business career pathways for students, especially upcoming Art Stream students taking their SPM examinations soon.

The College hopes that students updated on the current higher education market would come to realise the number of higher education opportunities available.

It provides financial aid in the form of scholarships and affordable hostel accommodations to students who chose to study here.

It bases its vision and mission on providing affordable quality higher education in Business Studies.

IBS College Miri’s September intake for the Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree and Postgraduate Masters Degree are now open.
