SIBU: Sibu Division Rugby Union (SDRU) will finalise on one venue among several areas in mind as they relish the prospect of the state government constructing a permanent rugby field, said chief coach Michael Ting.

This follows Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah’s recent revelation that the onus now lay with the Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) affiliates in Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu to identify a good area and make proposals to the state government for rugby fields.

Karim was responding to an appeal by SRU president Richard Song for state land to build a permanent home for rugby.

Ting said it will be a dream come true should SDRU eventually have its own field.

“For the moment, we are keeping our fingers crossed.”

The Ting brothers – Michael, Jeffry and Anthony – dubbed `The Three Muskeeters’ have been instrumental in organising and promoting the sport in Sibu.

On the upcoming Agong’s Cup in Shah Alam from Aug 21-27, Ting admitted “It’s not going to be easy” for the state team.

Sarawak is competing in the premier national inter-state rugby tournament after a lapse of three years.
