Two Sabahan calligraphers attend training in China

KOTA KINABALU: Two prominent Chinese calligraphers from Sabah were selected by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu to attend a two-week intensive training course on promoting Chinese calligraphy and painting.

Song Chee Yee and Yong Kim Min were among 64 overseas Chinese from 20 countries who attended the course at the Jinan University in Guangzhou City.
The course was organized by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of The State Council from July 13 to 26.

The participants also made a study visit to Guangzhou Museum of Art and Guangtung State Museum  to learn about the history of ancient Chinese calligraphy.

At the gratuation ceremony at the University Library where participants’ selected calligraphy works and painting were displayed, Song  presented his work “Gratutude To Jinan” to Jina University on behalf of all the participants.

Sik Koon Nyik, chairman of the Sandakan Liaison Committee of The Calligraphy Society of Malaysia, expressed his gratitude to the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu for recommending the two Sabahans to take part in the annual course.

Song was the founder and first president of Sabah Kota Kinabalu Borneon Calligraphy & Art Society and is the editor of “Sabah Calligraphy Corner”, a monthly publication in  See Hua Daily News Sabah. He is also a life member of the Kota Kinabalu Calligraphy & Art Society.
Yong is the pro-tem chairman of the Tenom Calligraphy & Art Society and president of the Putatan Chinese Chess Society.

Both of them also expressed their gratitude for being selected to take part in the course.
