KUCHING: The inclusion of Mohd Assri Merzuki and Aslina Chua An Ping in the national tennis team for the 29th SEA Games competition in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 21 to 26 has set another record in the Sarawak tennis history.

Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) president Dato Patrick Liew said yesterday that this was the first time that more than one player from Sarawak were chosen to represent the country in this regional sports event.

“It is the pride of SLTA that we can produce two national players for the SEA Games. Assri played for Malaysia at the Singapore SEA Games two years ago where he won a bronze medal in the team event.

“Hopefully, he can produce a good performance to win silver or even a gold in this games where stiff competition is expected from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines,” said Liew.

According to him, Assri would be playing in the men’s singles and partner Syed Mohd Agil Syeb Naguib from Selangor in the men’s doubles.

As for the US-based Aslina, Liew said she would be partnering Christian Didier Chin from Sabah in the mixed doubles as well as play in the women’s singles and spring a surprise there.

“I hope Assri and Aslina can do well in SEA Games and serve as the role models for the juniors to develop themselves to play at national or international levels,” added Liew.
