SUBANG JAYA: Malaysian chain of hypermarkets, supermarkets and emporiums Mydin was started by Malaysian entrepreneur Mydin Mohamed Ghulam Hussein at Jalan Tok Haim, Kota Bharu, Kelantan in 1957.

Thanks to patience and perseverance, his company Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad (Mydin) today stands strong amongst other hypermarkets in the country.

Yesterday marked a historic day for Mydin, during which all Malaysians witnessed the launch of Mydin’s 60th anniversary, #MYDIN60Tahun, which was held in a boisterous celebratory affair.

For the first time ever, Mydin organised this special occasion with the full support from sponsor partners to celebrate its achievement in the retail and wholesale industry, having been established for more than half a century.

Also present to celebrate the occasion were the Mydin board of directors, highest management of sponsor partners, suppliers as well as the media.

Challenge serves as motivation

Mydin managing director Datuk Wira Dr Ameer Ali said: “All praises to Allah, it has been six decades since Mydin served Malaysians and Malaysia. Celebrating the anniversary, which shares the same anniversary with our beloved country, is surely not something which is planned but it is just a coincidence which we are proud of.

“No doubt since 1957, there has always been challenges and obstacles, tears and joy, failures and success throughout these 60 years. Indeed, these elements are all that make us more matured and passionate to strive for the mission of being one of the biggest and influential retail and wholesale organisations with the best values, complete choice of items and continuous success based on Mydin’s own business formula,” he said at Mydin’s 60th anniversary celebration opening ceremony at Mydin USJ here yesterday.

At the same event, all 81 co-sponsors were given a memento each as a token of appreciation which was personally handed over by Ameer.

Among the sponsors for the anniversary celebration were diamond sponsor partners, gold sponsor partners, silver sponsors, bronze sponsors, and support sponsors.

The opening ceremony was accompanied by performances from Malaysia’s top artistes Anuar Zain and Jaclyn Victor.

In view of the joyous occasion, Ice Watch and Mydin have collaborated to release a special edition watch as a souvenir to all sponsors for this 60th anniversary celebration.

Mydin’s history of establishment Mydin’s journey after post-World War II started with a wooden shop in Kota Bharu, Kelantan in 1957. Two decades later, Mydin’s second shop opened in Kuala Terengganu in 1979, followed by its third shop at Jalan Masjid India in 1987.

The year 2006 marked a tremendous year for Mydin as its empire continued to grow after the opening of the first hypermarket at USJ, Subang Jaya in Selangor.

Today, Mydin has 322 branches featuring ten different business formats.

Ameer said of the 322 branches, there are also 25 hypermarket branches.
