KOTA KINABALU: The popular Taman Tun Fuad at Bukit Padang here will undergo a RM20 million upgrade after its management contract has been extended for another six months starting from June this year.

Luyang assemblyman Hiew King Cheu said the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) had drawn up an upgrading plan for the whole park, including clearing the area, building new resting sheds, integrated children playground and jogging track, making good hill slope and step climbing steps, improving operation office, making good foot bridge and upgrading Tai Chi platform.

“There are other new facilities being introduced to the park, like new jetty for the pond, fishing jetty, canopy walk, viewing sheds for observers and hill climbers’ track.

“The estimated cost of the new development will be around RM20 million and DBKK is presently sourcing for   the needed fund,” he said.

Liew added DBKK had the intention to further upgrade  the Tun Fuad Park into a Botanical Garden in Kota Kinabalu under its Landscape Department.

“At the moment the Water Theme Park (Water World) has stopped operation until further proposal is made.

“As far as the five-star hotel to be built in the park is concerned, no proposal has been made by any interested party,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Hiew also disclosed the three portions of the facilities, namely Restaurant  Beijing, Dewan Putera and Kampung Nelayan in the park are rented out by the DBKK.

Liew said the management contractor would take care of the cleanliness, order and security in the park, and to have public liability insurance for the people who are in or visiting the park.

As the management contract is only extended up to the end of 2017, he asked what would happen after that.

“It is high time that DBKK will have to work out a feasible plan to ensure that our heritage park in KK is well taken care off. This place is frequented by many local folks and it is a place for the tourists too, therefore a special committee has to be formed to involve other non-governmental organizations and government departments to formulate a good plan for the park and the people,” he said.
