KUALA LUMPUR: Public Works Department (PWD) staff are advised to increase their knowledge of technical and engineering areas to meet the country’s demand in line with the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) vision and goals.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the ministry had always encouraged PWD staff to explore, develop and make optimal use of the latest technology to generate knowledge and expertise in the two areas for the future benefit of the country.

“Facing the world without borders is a tough challenge for our technical staff because we are   migrating to a wholly digital environment.

“We need to spearhead and lead these new digital-based methods, so that we are not only relevant, but become the preferred implementation agency,” he said when opening the PWD Technical and Engineering Day 2017 at Dewan Tan Sri Mahfoz Khalid here yesterday.

Also present were his deputy, Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, and PWD Director-General Datuk Seri Ir Roslan Md Taha.

Fadillah said  to ensure  the country would not suffer shortage of expertise in technical field, the government had emphasised the need for technical and engineering education, while at the same time, developing human capital and forging cooperation at international level.

In order to enhance public awareness, he also suggested that the first Saturday of December be declared National Technical Profession Day to honour and uplift the status of the technical profession.

The PWD Technical and Engineering Day 2017 is organised to provide a platform for the public to gain information and awareness on the importance of engineering and technical aspects in their daily lives and for the development of the country.

A total of 32 industry exhibitors from various agencies participated in the exhibition in conjunction with the event. — Bernama
